Though I would argue strenuously for the right to wear it.

I work in the same building as the US Consulate for my province. Every day there is typically a massive line of people from India/China getting tourism visa’s or whatever.
Every couple weeks, there is one guy wearing an outfit likes this in what I am pretty sure is an attempt to improve his chances at getting whatever he is there for. Pretty funny every time.

Leela: Cool your jowls, Nixon. You may not like it that Dr. Zoidberg desecrated a flag. You might even find the image of it festering in his bowels somehow offensive. But the right to freedom of expression is guaranteed by the Earth Constitution.
Holo-Zoidberg: I was doing freedom of speech, Earth’s most sacred right.

Kind of like how German shipping companies used to name their ocean liners things like “Amerika” , “George Washington” , or “New York” . It used to be a superstition that immigration authorities at Ellis Island would look more favorably on those arriving aboard ships with American-sounding names.
It was convenient for us, too, since we didn't have to bother renaming most of those ships when we eventually seized them during WWI.

Kidding aside - I would not feel comfortable “sitting” on the flag, but agree - no way I want it banned.

(d) The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery. It should never be festooned, drawn back, nor up, in folds, but always allowed to fall free. Bunting of blue, white, and red, always arranged with the blue above, the white in the middle, and the red below, should be used for covering a speaker’s desk, draping the front of the platform, and for decoration in general.

As an American, it is your duty to burn that display. The flag is worn, tattered, no longer fit for display, and as such should be respectfully destroyed.

Never been clear to me exactly what that first sentence means. Clearly, it applies to the flag itself. But does it apply to clothing that (a) is not a flag but (b) has a d esign that is based on the flag?

I don’t know. The Flag Code was written at a time when people weren’t making bikinis and underwear out of Old Glory, so it’s hard to know. And what exactly is apparel ? Is this illegal? I hope not.

You just need to pair the shorts with the appropriate top.

As with all things sacred, one would hope that folks show a measure of respect, even when they do not hold the same things as sacred.

One would hope, though apparently not the case for some. Complete lack of respect. F or the men and women of the armed forces who served and died in preservation of the flag, and toward the republic for which it stands.

I am pretty confident apparel with the pattern of the flag does not constitute it being a flag. Imagine if Italy had a flag code similar to the U.S. (not sure if they do, don’t feel like researching). All apparel with red, white, and green pattern would be considered “flag” wear and be within violation. Those shorts are not made from American flags (at least I hope not) therefore should be ok. I’ve seen lots of people hem and sew “clothing” from flags at music festivals and posts on pinterest, and those definitely violate the flag code.
